Cruise the County
Age: Ages 12 or older.
Grab your bike and hit the trail for our annual spring preserve challenge! We’re welcoming the change of seasons with rides along some of our most beloved bikeways, plus a partnership with our neighbors at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie. Start each trail at one of our preserves and cruise your way to Will County destinations including Lake Renwick Preserve, Vermont Cemetery, downtown Frankfort and Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie.
Be sure to use your smartphone to track your rides for submissions. Complete the challenge any time between March 1 and May 31 and collect a slim-profile bike multitool as your reward. The deadline for submissions is May 31.
Trails are as follows:
- Lake Renwick Bikeway: Turtle Lake Access (5 miles total)
- Hickory Creek Bikeway and Old Plank Road: Trail: Hickory Creek Barrens to Prairie Park in Frankfort (13.4 miles round trip)
- DuPage River Trail: Whalon Lake to Vermont Cemetery (17.6 miles round trip)
- Wauponsee Glacial Trial: Sugar Creek Preserve to Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie (15.2 miles round trip)
Join us on Celebrate Trails Day on Saturday, April 27, for a group ride on the Wauponsee Glacial Trial, which will include a presentation at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie by their education staff. Participation in the program is eligible for the challenge submission but not required. Registration is required to attend the program.
No registration is required.
Trails are paved or crushed limestone and include some street crossings. For maps of each ride, visit reconnectwithnature.org or stop by one of our visitor centers. Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service to participate in this program should submit a request online no later than 48 hours before the program.
