Rustic and cozy Fireside Fest coming to Messenger Woods

Enjoy a fall outing at Messenger Woods Nature Preserve in Homer Glen on Oct. 3 during the Forest Preserve District’s Fireside Fest.

The event is set for 1 to 4 p.m. and will include hot dog roasting, making s’mores, outdoor games, giant inflatable ax throwing and crafts.

“As the leaves begin to change and the crispness of fall settles into the air, there’s no better time to slow down, get outside and enjoy the season with family and friends,” said Jenna Wright, the Forest Preserve's permitting and recreation supervisor.

Singer-songwriter Alex Hoffer will play live music at the preserve.

“He has performed at Forest Preserve events in the past and provides a good mix of relaxing and fun vibes for people to enjoy in an outdoor setting,” Wright said.

Messenger Woods is the perfect location for the event because it’s a fall hot spot, she added.

“The preserve has endless trees bursting with fall colors, nature sounds coming from every direction, and amenities like the picnic shelter and campsites that allow the community to gather,” she said. “We wanted this event to feel relaxing, rustic and cozy, which I think is just the setting Messenger Woods provides.”

The free, family-friendly event is designed to offer an easygoing way to spend a fall afternoon at the preserve, Wright said.

“Fireside Fest gives us the opportunity to bring individuals and families together for a relaxed, fun fall experience and remind everyone just how enjoyable it can be to spend time outside.”
