Horseback riding
The Forest Preserve offers three equestrian trails, which are comprised of limestone screenings and provide miles of horseback riding opportunities.
Horseback riding regulations
While horseback riding, please be aware of other trail users and exercise proper judgment for the safety of everyone. The trails are multi-use and may also be utilized by hikers, runners and bicyclists.
Travel at safe speeds and proceed at a slower pace when the trails are in heavy use. Slower traffic should stay to the right of the trail.
Do not block the trail. Use no more than half of the trail width when in a group, and be sure to watch and listen for other trail users.

Horseback riding trail locations
- The Wauponsee Glacial Trail travels 19.62 miles from Laraway Road in Joliet south to the Kankakee River in Custer Park. Access to the trail with trailer parking is available at Sugar Creek Preserve in Joliet. (Horses are not allowed on the paved portion of the Wauponsee Glacial Trail north of Laraway Road.)
- The Spring Creek Greenway Trail provides more than eight miles of equestrian trail at two preserves. Access to the trail with trailer parking is available at Hadley Valley Preserve – Gougar Road Access in Joliet (5.01 miles) and Messenger Marsh Preserve in Homer Township (3.44 miles).
- The Plum Creek Greenway Trail offers 3.15 miles of equestrian trail (one-way). Access to the trail is available at Goodenow Grove Nature Preserve in Crete Township. Horse trailer parking is available on Goodenow Road, west of the preserve entrance.
