The Forest Preserve District is throwing a Pollinator Party featuring live animals, crafts, native plants and hands-on activities at Isle a la Cache Museum on Saturday, June 14. 

The free, all-ages event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Attendees will learn about insects and other animals that perform the important task of pollinating plants, especially those that provide us with much of the food we eat.

This annual celebration marks the start of Pollinator Week with a lively mix of family-friendly activities, outdoor exploration and nature-themed fun. Incredible Bats will present live bats in an exhibit highlighting their role in pollination. Visitors also can tackle pollination challenges, create crafts to take home, and explore the Smithsonian Gardens’ “Pollination Investigation” exhibit before it closes on Sunday, June 22.

“This year’s Pollinator Party is bigger and better than ever!” said Jen Guest, facility supervisor at Isle a la Cache. “Take on our expanded Pollinator Challenge Course, where kids and families can dress up as pollinators, grab some ‘pollen,’ and test their skills as they race to pollinate flowers at the end of the course.”

Shoppers can browse artisan vendors selling nature-themed merchandise and stop by the native plant sale to bring home pollinator-friendly blooms. 

Pollinator Party is sponsored by The Nature Foundation of Will County with funding from Citgo Petroleum Corporation. Native plant sale partners include The Nature Foundation and Nicor Gas. 

The event also features the upgraded Insect Safari, now equipped with portable microscopes for up-close exploration of local bugs. A real beekeeper will be on hand to share insights into the world of bees and pollination. Attendees can stroll through the museum’s blooming pollinator garden, walk the scenic Des Plaines River trail, or step inside the Native American replica longhouse and Traders Cabin, which will host more live animals from Incredible Bats.

Tacos Maui and Kona Ice will be onsite offering food and frozen treats for purchase.
