Put some sizzle in your summer with Fun and Food Trucks

The Forest Preserve District’s popular Fun and Food Trucks series is back for summer 2025, offering three relaxed evenings filled with live music, tasty eats, craft beverages and nature-themed fun at scenic preserves throughout Will County.
“There are so many things to love at the preserves, and this year we’re shining the spotlight on a few crowd-favorite themes to put a little extra fun in Fun and Food Trucks,” said Em Wilcher, the Forest Preserve’s recreation coordinator. “These events are such an easy way to get out with loved ones without the pressures of hosting or meal planning. All you need is your sense of relaxation and an appetite.”
All three Fun and Food Truck programs take place on Fridays from 5 to 8 p.m. Each event includes lawn games, a bounce house and free Crumbl Cookie treats while supplies last. Admission is free, food and beverages are available for purchase and all ages are welcome.
June 13, Whalon Lake, Naperville
The series kicks off with lakeside vibes at Whalon Lake in Naperville, where visitors are encouraged to show up in Hawaiian shirts, deck shoes and sun hats to embrace the “on the water” theme.
“Evenings on the water this time of year are really spectacular,” Wilcher said.
Jukebox Heroes will return to the stage with classic rock favorites, and visitors can enjoy programming from the now-reopened Hidden Oaks Nature Center, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Forest Preserve staff. Food vendors include Grumpy Gaucho, Lil' Deb’s and Tacos Maui, with beverages available from The Dock.
“Pair good music and good food with a breeze off the lake and it’s a recipe for a perfect night,” Wilcher said.
July 11, Forked Creek Preserve – Forsythe Woods, Florence Township
Next up is a night in the woods at Forsythe Woods in Forked Creek Preserve, near Wilmington. Nestled between the Kankakee River and Wauponsee Glacial Trail, this quieter southern preserve offers an ideal setting for neighbors to gather and enjoy the beauty of the forest.
“This one is all about appreciating the forest with great atmosphere and company,” Wilcher said. “We really want to ensure we’re offering programs all across the county and making events accessible for folks in all of our townships.”
Michael C. Hayes will provide live music, with food from Smokin’ Z BBQ and drinks from Route 66 Old School Brewing. A photo op with forest animal cutouts will give kids and adults a chance to connect with their favorite woodland creatures, and a half-mile trail loop offers a peaceful stroll through nature.
Aug. 8, Hickory Creek Preserve – La Porte Road Access, Mokena
With mature trees, a flowing creek and miles of trail, this preserve offers a picturesque backdrop for families looking to savor one last summer night before the school year begins.
“We’re encouraging the locals to hop on the trail and head our way,” Wilcher said.
Food trucks Lil' Deb’s and Life’s a Slice will be onsite, with drinks from Hickory Creek Brewing and live acoustic music from Alex Hoffer. Visitors can also chat with representatives from the Leave No Trace national education team to learn about how to recreate responsibly in the outdoors.
Even if you’re not an avid hiker or camper, Wilcher encourages everyone to give Fun and Food Trucks a try.
“Even for those who don’t consider themselves to be super ‘nature-y,’ these events are feel-good times to unplug and connect with the beauty of nature and good company,” she said. “I can’t wait to see everyone out there!”
The 2025 Fun and Food Trucks series is sponsored by Old National Bank.
