Compostin’ Pumpkin Drop Off

Did you keep your pumpkin till Thanksgiving, missing out on the Pumpkin Smash festivities earlier this month? Wish you could still compost your pumpkin, but don’t know where to go? Well, you’re in luck! Bring your pumpkin to the Hidden Oaks Nature Center composting area. By properly composting your pumpkin, you are avoiding the landfill and illegally dumping in the forest preserves all while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating natural fertilizer for soils.

No registration required.

Please remove non-organic items including candles, wax, artificial decorations, etc. Pumpkins with synthetic paint cannot be composted. Pumpkins with non-toxic tempera paint can be set aside to be composted on-site. 

The trail to the composting area may be over uneven, natural terrain and accessible sidewalks. Hidden Oaks Nature Center is an accessible facility. Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service to participate in this program should mention their request when registering or submit a request online no later than 48 hours before the program.
