Nature Foundation's first in-person plant sale set for May 18-19 at Isle a la Cache

The Nature Foundation of Will County's spring online plant sale has concluded, but you can still purchase plants during an in-person sale.

The in-person sale is set for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 18, and 9 a.m. to noon Sunday, May 19, at Isle a la Cache preserve in Romeoville. The 2024 sale will focus on pollinators and will feature a variety of monarch butterfly, hummingbird and bee favorites.

The Foundation's website features  a list of plants that will be available at the sale while quantities last. Plants range in price from $3 for plugs to $15 for 1-gallon containers. The event is rain or shine so dress accordingly. Bring your own box and fill it up as you shop. Cash, checks and credit cards are accepted.

Rain barrels can be ordered in advance via The Conservation Foundation and Upcycle. Rain barrels can be picked up during the plant sale.

Native plant talks will be offered in Traders Cabin during the plant sale.

Also on Saturday, May 18, vendors will be in attendance to offer items for sale and plant advice:

  • Wild Birds Unlimited – Joliet: peruse and purchase garden art, bird feeders and more. 
  • Will County Audubon: get tips on how you can support both resident and migrating birds by making just a few environmentally friendly choices.
  • The Village of Romeoville’s Conservation and Sustainability Committee: learn about incentives the village will be offering to support pollinators. 
  • Pizzo & Associates and Good Steward Ecoscapes: ask your toughest native landscaping questions and representatives from these companies will provide answers. 
  • Forest Preserve staff will be on site selling nature-related apparel and merchandise from its Outsider Threads line. Proceeds benefit The Nature Foundation of Will County.

There will be more opportunities to buy native plants throughout the summer. Here are some additional plant sale dates:

  • Pollinator Party Native Plant Pop-Up Sale –10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 15, Isle a la Cache preserve.
  • Summer Blooms Native Plant Sale – Online sale, 9 a.m. Saturday, June 22, through 4 p.m. Saturday, July 13. Online order pickup and in-person sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, and 9 a.m. to noon Sunday, Aug. 4, at Isle a la Cache preserve. 
  • Hummingbird Fest Native Plant Sale – 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at Plum Creek Nature Center, Crete Township. 
  • Fall on the Farm Native Plant Sale – 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept.14, at Riverview Farmstead Preserve, Naperville.

And new this year, is a Gardens Gone Native native plant garden tour from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 13. Tickets cost $20 per person and can be purchased online

The Foundation is a nonprofit, tax-exempt charitable organization dedicated to supporting Forest Preserve initiatives that protect nature, inspire discovery and bring people and nature together.

Take It Outside Challenge wins Outstanding Environmental Education Program Award

The Take It Outside Challenge has received an Outstanding Environmental Education Program Award from the Illinois Parks and Recreation Association's Forest Preserve and Conservation Section. The 2023 challenge drew 1,2000 participants in its inaugural year.

New Lenox woman named 2023 Volunteer of the Year

Sally Wieclaw of New Lenox is the Forest Preserve District of Will County's Volunteer of the Year. Wieclaw started volunteering in 2001 to reduce stress in her life. Now she is an integral part of the District's work to protect plants, monitor butterflies and remove invasive species.
