The site navigation utilizes arrow, enter, escape, and space bar key commands. Left and right arrows move across top level links and expand / close menus in sub levels. Up and Down arrows will open main level menus and toggle through sub tier links. Enter and space open menus and escape closes them as well. Tab will move on to the next part of the site rather than go through menu items.

Hammel Woods Crumby Recreation Area

Preserve History

The 445-acre Hammel Woods was acquired between 1930 and 2011.

The preserve is part of the DuPage River preservation system, which conserves more than 1,500 acres.

The first 147 acres of Hammel Woods were the District's second and third acquisitions in 1930. The preserve is located at the site of the historic Grinton Mill and was named in honor of American soldiers who fought in the World War I battle in Hamel, France.

Crumby Recreation Area is one of three access areas to the preserve, with DuPage River Access and Route 59 Access, both in Shorewood, serving as the other entry points.
