Monster Earthworm Surfaces After Massive Rains

The scene has played out many times following a solid rain, where earthworms surface in massive numbers across lawns, sidewalks and driveways.

In one recent case though, it wasn't the number of earthworms, but the freakishly large size of just one that made the occurrence noteworthy.

The worm is known as the Digaster longmani and can grow up to three feet long. The one in the picture appears to be hitting the limit.

These monsters are found in Australia, but are rarely seen. Digaster longmanis live deep in the rainforest soil, but when massive rains hit the area last week, this one had no choice but to rise up and grab some air.

"They burrow deep in the ground and when it gets too wet down underneath they come up," said Paul Lyons, a member of the Tamborine Mountain National History Association.

These worms are so big that even when they're not seen, they can be heard below ground.

"In the 1970s, I was walking through Lamington National Park and could hear them beneath me as they gurgled through some water,” said Robert Raven, Head of Terrestrial Biodiversity at the Queensland Museum.
