The site navigation utilizes arrow, enter, escape, and space bar key commands. Left and right arrows move across top level links and expand / close menus in sub levels. Up and Down arrows will open main level menus and toggle through sub tier links. Enter and space open menus and escape closes them as well. Tab will move on to the next part of the site rather than go through menu items.

As warmer weather moves into the Midwest, the Forest Preserve District would like to make you aware of a serious disease, Leptospirosis, which can affect dog owners and their pets.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that can be transmitted between humans and animals. Humans can contract the disease through contact with water, food or soil containing urine from infected animals. Outbreaks of Leptospirosis in animals are usually caused by exposure to water that has been contaminated by infected animals. As a precaution, one good practice, for example, is to avoid allowing your pet to drink out of another dog's water bowl as well as community water bowls.

Although many veterinarians do recommend vaccinating your dog against the disease, the Forest Preserve District has not made any new changes to its policy, which currently does not require the vaccination in order to attend its dog parks.

According to a recent news article, currently most Leptospirosis cases are being reported in Chicago. No cases have been reported in Will County Forest Preserves.

At this time, the Forest Preserve would simply like to ensure that pet owners are aware of this disease. Please consult your pet's veterinarian for more information.
