The site navigation utilizes arrow, enter, escape, and space bar key commands. Left and right arrows move across top level links and expand / close menus in sub levels. Up and Down arrows will open main level menus and toggle through sub tier links. Enter and space open menus and escape closes them as well. Tab will move on to the next part of the site rather than go through menu items.

Event Details

This six-week beekeeping course will teach you all you need to know on how to become a successful beekeeper! Mike Rusnak, a member of the Will County Beekeepers Association, will use his 12 years of experience to lead you through the beekeeping process. The workshop fee includes the book “The Backyard Beekeeper” by Kim Flottum.

The program will be held Tuesdays, February 20-March 27.

Sessions include these presentations:

  • Week 1   Familiarization: Introduction, History, Why Keep Honeybees, Resources, Cost
  • Week 2   The Honeybee (Apis mellifera): Anatomy, Life Cycle, Castes, Jobs, Characteristics
  • Week 3   Equipment and Stock: Hive Components, Tools, Location, Suppliers, Races
  • Week 4   Management: Inspections, Pests, Parasites, Diseases, Feeding, Treatments
  • Week 5   Colony Dynamics: Honey Production, Year in the Apiary, Winter Clustering, Temperature Regulation
  • Week 6   Review, Examination and Course Feedback

The program will take place indoors in an accessible facility. Weather permitting, an optional off-site field day will be planned to correspond with installation of a package of honeybees in a Langstroth hive. Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service to participate in this program should mention their request when registering, or submit a request online no later than 48 hours before the program.
