Please note: Masks are required for all in-person, indoor and outdoor program participants, with the exception of those younger than 2 years old and those with a medical condition or disability that prevents them from wearing one, per state guidelines.
Have you ever wanted to try camping but weren’t sure where to start or what to do? Join the Forest Preserve and receive a beginner crash course in everything that goes into the activity. Participants will get hands-on experience setting up tents, building a fire, cooking over an open fire, and handling unexpected situations that arise. No personal gear is required for the event, but participants can bring lawn chairs and any gear they are looking for help understanding. Everyone will get an opportunity to roast their own marshmallows and make their own s’mores!
If you are interested in reserving a campsite at Messenger Woods to test your skills, please call us at 815.722.5892. The Forest Preserve also offers camping gear packages with the supplies needed for your overnight stay, including the tent!
Registration required by Thursday, November 12: 815.727.8700.
Campsites at Messenger Woods are accessed by walking a short distance from the parking lot on a smooth sidewalk. The campsite used for the program is accessible. Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service to participate in this program should submit a request online no later than 48 hours before the program.
