Horseback Riding

We offer two equestrian trails, which are comprised of limestone screenings and provide over 24 miles of horseback-riding opportunity.

The Wauponsee Glacial Trail runs for 21 miles from Laraway Road in Joliet south to the Kankakee River in Custer Park. This multi-use trail passes primarily through open farmland. The primary access for this preserve is at the Sugar Creek Administration Center, 17540 W. Laraway Road in Joliet, where there is plenty of parking available for horse trailers. (Horses are not allowed on the paved portion of the Wauponsee Glacial Trail north of Laraway Road.)

The other equestrian trail we manage is at Messenger Marsh (formerly Homer Trails) on South Bell Road in Homer Glen. The 3.5-mile trail leads through woodlands, wetlands, and open prairie. Horse trailer parking is available.
