Veterans Woods - Roy F. Hassert Grove

Fall generally offers ample opportunities to find all sorts of fungus in the preserves and as cooler, wet weather moves in, be on the lookout while on the trails. View more information.


The 77-acre Veterans Woods was acquired in 1966.

The preserve is part of the Des Plaines River preservation system, which conserves more than 2,400 acres of land.

Roy F. Hassert Grove is one of two access areas to the preserve. The other access area is Traders Corner in Romeoville.

Natural Resources

Veterans Woods protects forest habitat.

The preserve is home to a variety of plant species, including the yellow trout lily and oaks.

Roy F. Hassert Grove features 0.46 mile of natural surface trail, ideal for the following activities:Picnicking

Roy F. Hassert Grove offers one picnic shelter for rental, Roy F. Hassert Grove Shelter, with a permit capacity of 100 people. Learn more about picnic permits and fees.
