The Veterans Memorial Trail is being developed alongside the I-355 southern extension in a corridor provided by the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority. The multi-purpose trail will be paved with asphalt for non-motorized, bicycle and pedestrian use.

In 2011 and 2012, the District is constructing Segment I of the trail, consisting of 0.55 miles from the Centennial Trail in Keepataw Preserve north to Bluff Road. View more information about this project.

In 2012, the District plans to initiate development of Segment II of the trail, which will extend it one mile from Bluff Road north to International Parkway. This portion of the trail is supported by a grant from the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program, and a partnership with the Village of Woodridge, which operates an existing bike trail at International Parkway. This trail connection will unite hundreds of miles of trails in Will, DuPage, and Cook Counties.

Future plans for the trail include development of a segment south from 127th Street in Lemont to Route 6 in New Lenox, in addition to an east-west link near 135th Street to the Centennial Trail, connecting this third segment to Segments I and II. This 11-mile segment will connect to our Spring Creek Greenway Trail and will utilize an engineering grant and funds raised from the 2007 "Roll the Tollway" I-355 Grand Opening Bike Ride sponsored by the Active Transportation Alliance. Local agencies along the proposed route will need to adopt sections of the trail to help fund and provide maintenance.
