The 525-acre McKinley Woods was acquired between 1931 and 2004.

The preserve is part of the Des Plaines River preservation system, which conserves more than 2,400 acres of land.

Prior to the District's acquisition of the land, it was a private resort and was commonly called "Moose Island."

Kerry Sheridan Grove is one of two access areas to the preserve. The other access area is Frederick's Grove in Channahon.

Natural Resources

McKinley Woods protects a diversity of habitats, including forest, prairie, wetland, and a portion of the Des Plaines River.

Wildlife found at the preserve includes the queen snake and 99 bird species, such as the cedar waxwing, bald eagle, and purple martin.

The preserve is also home to a variety of plant species, including redbud, blue ash, and chinquapin oak.

The site is managed with invasive species control, prescribed burning, and community restoration to protect and enhance its natural resources. Learn more about the Districtís land management activities.

Amenities and Activities

Kerry Sheridan Grove offers two picnic shelters for rental: Kerry Sheridan Grove Shelter (permit capacity of 90 people) and Four Rivers Shelter (permit capacity of 200 people). Learn more about picnic permits and fees.


Kerry Sheridan Grove offers access to shoreline fishing on the DuPage and Des Plaines Rivers and the I&M Canal. Statewide and District regulations apply. Learn more about fishing in the forest preserves.


Kerry Sheridan Grove features a canoe/kayak launch on the DuPage River. No launch pass is required. All persons in a canoe or kayak must wear a personal flotation device at all times. Visitor Center

Kerry Sheridan Grove features the Four Rivers Environmental Education Center, which offers nature education opportunities for school groups and youth groups, public programs, and facility rentals. The Four Rivers Environmental Education Center is open by permit only.

Programs and Events

A variety of fun and educational public programs are hosted at Kerry Sheridan Grove throughout the year, including nature programs and interpretive hikes. View upcoming programs and events.
