Lake Chaminwood Preserve

The 120-acre Lake Chaminwood Preserve was acquired between 2000 and 2011.

The preserve is part of the DuPage River preservation system, which conserves more than 1,500 acres of land.

Prior to the Districtís acquisition of the land, its two lakes were created and used for quarrying.

Natural Resources

Lake Chaminwood Preserve protects a 35-acre lake, a 12-acre lake, and a portion of the DuPage River with associated wetland habitat.

Amenities and Activities


Lake Chaminwood Preserve features 0.7 mile of paved trail, ideal for the following activities:Picnicking

The preserve offers one picnic shelter for groups of less than 25 people. The shelter is not available for rental.


The preserve offers access to shoreline fishing on the two lakes. Catch and release fishing is encouraged, but daily limits are:

*The daily limit applies to the combination of these fish species: anglers may take up to 15 bluegill or redear sunfish, not 15 of each; anglers may take one largemouth bass or one smallmouth bass, not both; anglers may take up to 6 sauger or walleye, not 6 of each; and anglers may take up to 15 white, black, or hybrid crappie, not 15 of each.

The preserve features a canoe/kayak launch. No launch pass is required. All persons in a canoe or kayak must wear a personal flotation device at all times. Learn more about canoeing/kayaking in the forest preserves, or download a map of the northeastern Illinois water trails.


The preserve allows for the launch of small fishing boats, and there is no launch fee or District permit required. However, only watercraft that can be carried on top of a vehicle is permitted.
