Hammel Woods in FallHammel Woods is the District's second oldest preserve, with the first purchase of land having occurred in 1930. The preserve was named in honor of those who fought in the World War I battle in Hamel, France.

Visitors to this 408-acre preserve can enjoy miles of paved and natural turf trails that meander through mature forest and along a ridge overlooking the scenic DuPage River.

Running through Hammel Woods is a 1.7-mile section of the DuPage River Trail, also known as the Hammel Woods Bikeway. This paved bicycle path connects the four picnic areas within the preserve and is being constructed by communities that lie along the DuPage River. Hammel Woods also features 2.5 miles of nature trails that can be used by hikers and cross-country skiers. A highlight along these trails is an observation deck providing a scenic view of the dam and river.

Hammel Woods' popularity as an outdoor recreation hotspot is evident with its abundant picnickers, campers, and anglers. Three large picnic shelters and campsites near the river offer the perfect place for family and group gatherings. Anglers and canoeists take advantage of access to the river and enjoy fly-fishing near the dam, or launch their canoes for a two-hour excursion to McKinley Woods in Channahon.

Hammel Woods is also home to the Hammel Woods Dog Park, the District's first of the current three dog parks. A permit is required for dog park use. This 7-acre fenced park provides an exercise area where dogs can run free.

In 2012, improvements will be made to the dog park and trailhead area at DuPage River Access, and an extension of the DuPage River Trail will be constructed. View more information about this project.
