Spring Creek Greenway Tree Mitigation
Project Description:
The Spring Creek Greenway Tree Mitigation project consists of planting native trees and shrubs. A variety of trees and shrubs are being planted, with oak and hickory being the predominant species.
In 2009, 10,331 trees and shrubs were planted and 1,280 enclosures were constructed at Messenger Marsh Preserve. An additional 310 native trees are being planted between 2011 and 2012.
In addition, 680 trees and shrubs were planted at Messenger Woods Nature Preserve in 2009, and 85 enclosures were constructed. An additional 95 native trees were planted in 2011.
Phased removal of the enclosures is planned between 2012 and 2014.
A future phase of the project is scheduled to occur between 2013 and 2014. An additional 184 trees and shrubs and 411 trees are scheduled to be planted at Messenger Woods Nature Preserve. Also, 1,952 trees and shrubs and 156 trees are scheduled to be planted at Hadley Valley Preserve.
This project is funded through an intergovernmental agreement with the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority for the extension of I-355.
