The project was located at Messenger Marsh and Messenger Woods Nature Preserve in Homer Glen, and Hadley Valley in Joliet.
Project Description:
The Spring Creek Greenway Tree Mitigation project consisted of planting native trees and shrubs. A variety of trees and shrubs were planted, with oak and hickory being the predominant species.

In 2009, 10,331 trees and shrubs were planted and 1,280 enclosures were constructed at Messenger Marsh in Homer Glen. An additional 310 native trees were planted between 2011 and 2012.

In addition, 680 trees and shrubs were planted at Messenger Woods Nature Preserve in Homer Glen in 2009, and 85 enclosures were constructed. An additional 95 native trees were planted in 2011.

Phased removal of the enclosures took place between 2012 and 2014.

Another phase of the project occurred between 2013 and 2014. An additional 184 trees and shrubs and 411 trees were planted at Messenger Woods Nature Preserve. Also, 1,952 trees and shrubs and 156 trees were planted at Hadley Valley in Joliet.

This project was funded through an intergovernmental agreement with the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority for the extension of I-355.
