Kankakee Sands Preserve Hydrology and Natural Community Restoration
The property is located north of Route 113 and west of West River Road in Custer Township, and is part of Kankakee Sands Preserve.
In August 2015, the Forest Preserve District of Will County (Forest Preserve) entered into an intergovernmental agreement with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) to restore hydrology and natural communities on adjacent properties owned by the Forest Preserve and IDNR. This project will involve filling/blocking an existing ditch and disabling tiles that drain the two adjacent preserves, Wilmington Shrub Prairie Nature Preserve (IDNR) and Kankakee Sands Preserve (Forest Preserve). In advance of the hydrologic restoration work, weedy trees and shrubs in the project area will be cleared.
After natural hydrology is restored, seeds of appropriate native plant species will be planted in the current agricultural field. Seeds of these specialized plants native to the Kankakee Sands ecoregion are being obtained in partnership with The Nature Conservancy.
