Reconnect with Nature Walks

Woods Walk LogoTake part in the new "Reconnect with Nature Walks" program, which will be held on five Saturdays from May through September.

In cooperation with the National Recreation and Park Association's walking initiative, the Forest Preserve District is kicking off this program to encourage nature lovers and fitness buffs to walk or run a variety of preserve trails and distances.

Instead of the former "Woods Walk" program, which involved participants walking select trails on their own time, this new program encourages participants to tackle the trail challenge with other preserve patrons.

Join one or more "Reconnect with Nature Walks" or complete them all. Each event in the series will begin with a fun run at 9 a.m., followed by a walk at 10 a.m.

The walk/runs are scheduled for:
Girl with Fall Fest HatAll five outings will include distances for everyone's pace and fitness level: 1 mile, 2 miles or 3.1 miles (the distance of a 5K).

A different community small business partner will be on site at each event with activities and merchandise. Partners include DNA Athletics of Crest Hill, Running Excels of Frankfort and Naperville Running Company of Naperville. Event participants are encouraged to bring their old athletic shoes for recycling, as each event will have a drop-off site.

All participants will receive a giveaway to take home. Those who complete all five trails in the series whether it's at one of the organized events or on their own time will receive a larger prize. Once all of the walks have been completed, participants can fill out their Nature Walks Log in order to receive their prize.

You also can print a PDF version of the log and mail it in.

"Reconnect with Nature Walks" are perfect for walking groups and trail trekkers who are seeking new terrain, runners revving up for a race, or "Woods Walk" veterans who are looking for a new challenge.

The walks are free and registration is not required. The program will be held on paved pathways and natural surfaces across uneven terrain.
