Lani Nishimura of Plainfield won the September portion of the Forest Preserve District of Will County's Preserve the Moment photo contest
with a picture of a red-tailed hawk soaring above Lake Renwick Preserve in Plainfield.
Judges were impressed with the contrast of the magnificent bird's outstretched wings against a partly cloudy powder blue sky.
Nishimura said she's a frequent visitor to the preserves.
“I try to go on bike rides or hikes in the Will County forest preserves a few times a month and I always bring my camera!” she said in an email.
Nishimura said she has learned to open her eyes to the world around her, and that’s how she spotted the red-tailed hawk.
“Don't forget to change your perspective when taking photographs and look up, not just in front, down, and around. You never know who is watching you!"
Honorable mentions for the month went to: Lauren Dundek of New Lenox for a field of butter yellow bur-marigolds at Hickory Creek Preserve; William Kaluzny of Shorewood for a dramatic blue-and-orange sunset at Lake Chaminwood; Chuck Medrano of Mokena for a frog gliding through the water at Hickory Creek Preserve; and Michael Fagan of Frankfort for a rose-breasted grosbeak nibbling on berries at Hickory Creek Preserve.

After the contest ends on Dec. 31, monthly winners will be posted online, and members of the public will judge the photos and choose final winners.
