The staff of the Forest Preserve District of Will County would like to make you aware of a serious disease, Leptospirosis, which can affect you and your pet.
Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that can be transmitted between humans and animals. Humans can contract the disease through contact with water, food or soil containing urine from infected animals. Outbreaks of Leptospirosis in animals are usually caused by exposure to water that has been contaminated by infected animals.
It has been recommended that dogs that frequent parks and wooded areas, where they may come in contact with infected animals, receive a Leptospirosis vaccine. Although most veterinarians do recommend vaccinating your dog against the disease, the Forest Preserve District of Will County has not made any new changes to our policy that requires the vaccination in order to attend our dog parks.
At this time, we would simply like to ensure that you are aware of this disease and the steps you can take to prevent you and your pet from becoming infected. Please consult your pet’s veterinarian for more information. Thank you for enjoying our preserves with your pet.
