The Forest Preserve District of Will County is building its first access area for Plum Valley Preserve and its first dog park in eastern Will County.

The project’s launch was celebrated on Friday, May 6, with a groundbreaking ceremony at the future access/dog park site on Burville Road, east of Illinois 394 in Crete Township. Ralph Schultz, the Forest Preserve’s chief operating officer, said off-leash dog parks have been a successful addition to the District’s many recreational offerings, and they’re a great way to introduce people to all the District has to offer.

The Burville Road dog park will be the District’s sixth dog park. The Forest Preserve’s other dog parks are located in Joliet, Homer Glen, Naperville, Shorewood and Wilmington. People who use the dog parks really love them, said Forest Preserve Board Secretary Judy Ogalla of Monee.

“This is great that the Forest Preserve is coming out here and putting together a great dog park with a wonderful pavilion,” she said. “Everyone is looking forward to it.”

The new access area and dog park will symbolize greater Forest Preserve participation by eastern Will County residents, said Forest Preserve Board Commissioner Bob Howard of Beecher.

“This dog park, I believe, will serve everyone from Peotone to University Park, from Crete to Beecher, Monee and everyone in between,” Howard said. “This is phenomenal.”

Plum Valley Preserve – Burville Road Access will include a parking lot, a picnic shelter to accommodate 50 people, an information board and a natural surface trail around the dog park. The project is scheduled for completion in 2017.
